Principal's Corner

Jack Vermillion

Jack Vermillion and Wife

I was a product of the Albuquerque Public School System. I graduated from Del Norte High School before attending the University of New Mexico. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Education, a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education, and have my EdS in Administration.

I have been the Principal at SY Jackson for the last 15 years. Both of my boys attended SY Jackson and received a great education. This is my 33rd year with APS, and I have really enjoyed working with the teaches and students.

I began teaching at Mac Arthur Elementary where I taught grades 3/4, 4/5, and 3/4/5. I then transferred to Acoma Elementary where I taught 2nd grade for 2 years. My next position was at Dennis Chavez Elementary where I taught 1st grade for 2 1/2 years. I was then hired as the Assistant Principal at Mary Ann Binford Elementary and was there for 1 1/2 years. After that, I was selected as the Principal at Chelwood Elementary. I was there for 9 years before moving to SY Jackson. I have also been the summer school principal at many elementary and middle schools.

I have been teaching a class at New Mexico Highlands University in Rio Rancho for the last 17 years. I teach a class and supervise Administrative Interns who are working on their Master's Degrees in Administration.

I have been on the NBC Nightly News for the Character Counts Program at Chelwood Elementary. I was also featured in the January 2003 Reader's Digest for the Bully Proofing Program at Chelwood. In 2005 I was selected as the New Mexico Principal Of The Year by the New Mexico PTA and am listed in Who's Who of American Teachers.

I have been married for 30 years and have 2 boys. One of my boys graduated from UNM last year with a finance degree and now works at the Bank of Albuquerque. My other son is in the Pharmacy School at UNM. My wife works at Sandia Labs. I have been a coach at Roadrunner Little League with over 25 teams and have worked with many USSSA teams. I  also coached several years of Basketball with the YMCA, Upward Basketball, and AYBL.
